South Africa - April 2003
Terry, Laurie & Allison McDonald

South Africa is a beautiful country, at least the part of it we saw – the Western Cape province. Mountains rising from the sea. Rocky headlands and coves with beautiful sand beaches. Mountain sides covered in classic Mediterranean vegetation called fynbos: low shrubs, grasses, beautiful Protea flowers and heather.
Of course the area also boasts the same classic Mediterranean climate – hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters – as parts of Australia, Chile and California. This is the ideal climate for growing wine grapes – just like in Mediterranean areas around the world! There has to be a thousand vintners in the Western Cape - all producing excellent wine.
