Giraffe, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

On our way to the Serengeti, we descend almost 1km down the western side of the Crater Highlands. On the way, there are spectacular views of the Gol Mountains to the north and the Serengeti to the east. As an added bonus, we frequently see giraffe in the area.

Maasai Pre-Morani, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro is not a national park, but a conservation area because the Maasai are still allowed to use the land to graze their cattle. There are "cultural" bomas (homesteads) set up to allow tourists to see how the Maasai live. These three boys give tourists an chance to photograph their traditional dress. The two boys in black are going through the initiation rites to become Warriors or Morani. They have recently gone through the circumcision ritual and will wear these black robes for a few months until they become Morani like the fellow in the centre.
